ABOUT DARE
DARE - Defense Against Rape and Eve-teasing, is a nation-wide movement for women's safety wherein girls are taught effective self-defense techniques so that they can take charge of their own safety.
DARE was launched on 22nd April 2015 by Vaamaa Baldota, and was created by amalgamating various psychological, verbal and martial art techniques. The DARE programme has been well received by the girls who have undergone training, till date.
Largely based on the Jeet Kune Do philosophy of martial arts, which focusses on leverage, technique and timing, the DARE programme seeks to empower girls to take charge of their own safety. The training includes updating girls with the right knowledge, strategies and skills to deal with any untoward situations, such as possible sexual threats and attacks.
The programme has been designed keeping in mind the aggressor's psychology and educates the trainees on their rights, the law and the support they can get in such situations.
To mentally and physically equip every woman to DARE to take on all forms of social injustices.
DARE is not just a set of self-defense techniques, it is a state of mind, having a high level of confidence and developing a self-belief that nobody can hurt your dignity. This requires understanding the male psychology, learning the right verbal confrontation skills to restrain them from advancing, understanding the situation and using various techniques to survive and escape.
We have trained
2,75,000 Girls in 1,417 Schools,
who now feel safer,
and 452 Volunteers
who have gone on to train their friends and other students
in their schools and colleges
As of June 2019
The DARE workshop includes practical demonstrations and is strictly an all-women event, targeted at female students in high schools, colleges and working women as well.
The workshop is a mix of theoretical and practical sessions, aimed at training the girls in identifying threats, building self-confidence, defending against common attacks, training on utilising an object or their environment to protect themselves and learning proven techniques to work under stress. We identify and recruit female candidates from every state we conduct sessions at, to move on as DARE master trainers. We facilitate the process by providing them with the special training they need through our trainers.
The MSPL DARE Programme conducts training by collaborating with educational institutions such as schools, colleges, hostels, educational trusts, community-based organisations, NGOs and state governments for necessary permissions and co-ordination.
